Mickey Hart turned astrophysical data into a musical history of the entire universe
In short: Beyond his legendary tenure as a Grateful Dead drummer, Mickey Hart has spent decades exploring the intersection of rhythm, science, and global culture. From recording the heartbeat of his unborn son to sonifying cosmic microwave background radiation, Hart treats percussion as a fundamental language for understanding the human experience.
Born in Brooklyn in 1943, Mickey Hart was raised by a mother who was a drummer and a father who was a champion rudimental percussionist. His own path to musical mastery was unconventional, involving a stint in the United States Air Force as a member of The Airmen of Note. After his discharge in 1965, he eventually connected with the Grateful Dead in 1967, forming the legendary percussion duo known as the Rhythm Devils alongside Bill Kreutzmann. His time with the band was marked by significant highs and a difficult departure in 1971, following his father's embezzlement of $70,000 from the group and Hart's own struggles with substance use.
Hart’s curiosity extends far beyond rock music. He has become a prominent figure in ethnomusicology, working with the Smithsonian Institution and the Library of Congress to preserve global musical traditions. His 1991 album Planet Drum, which spent 26 weeks at number one on the Billboard World Music chart, earned the first Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. This commitment to preservation is mirrored in his academic interests, including his work on the board of the Institute for Music and Neurologic Function, where he investigates the neural basis of rhythm and its potential for healing.
Perhaps his most ambitious project is Rhythms of the Universe, a 2010 composition created in collaboration with Nobel Laureate physicist George Smoot. By utilizing astrophysical data—including signals from quasars, supernovae, and the cosmic microwave background—Hart constructed a musical narrative of the universe from the Big Bang to the present day. This fusion of art and science exemplifies his lifelong pursuit of connecting the percussive patterns of the natural world with the traditions of human culture, a mission he continues through his ongoing performances and archival initiatives.
