The unorthodox Brazilian fighter who turned the UFC into a spectacle
In short: From karate and jiu-jitsu to the global stage, Michel Pereira redefined mixed martial arts with high-flying kicks and unpredictable strikes. While his career was marked by spectacular knockouts and performance awards, it was also defined by intense controversy, weight misses, and a fighting style that defied traditional training.
Born in Tucum.ã, Pará, Brazil, Michel Pereira began his martial arts journey with karate at age 12, later adding Brazilian jiu-jitsu at 16. His professional ascent through regional Brazilian promotions like Jungle Fight and XFC showcased a fighter capable of both technical precision—such as a guillotine choke victory over Geraldo Coelho—and wild, creative striking, including wheel kicks and flying knees. Before reaching the international stage, he secured titles in the Serbian Battle Championship. His early professional years also included competing for organizations such as 300 Sparta and Road Fighting Championship.
Pereira's tenure in the UFC was a rollercoaster of brilliance and disciplinary struggle. He earned five 'Performance of the Night' awards, notably for his knockout of Danny Roberts in May 2019. However, his path was frequently disrupted by weight-cutting issues. In a fight against Tristan Connelly, a 2-pound weight miss cost him 30% of his purse and his share of the $50,000 'Fight of the Night' award. He also faced a disqualification in 2020 against Diego Sanchez for an illegal knee to a grounded opponent. Beyond his striking, he demonstrated submission prowess with an arm triangle choke against Stanley Barbosa. He also achieved success in South Korea, securing technical knockout victories against Ryul Kim and Hea Jun Yang.
The latter part of his career was marked by significant volatility. His 2026 bout against Sharabutdin Magomedov ended in a unanimous decision loss and sparked public outcry when Pereira criticized referee Herb Dean for failing to deduct a point for hair-pulling. Following his removal from the UFC roster in July 2026, Pereira's legacy remains that of a highly skilled, albeit unpredictable, combatant who brought a unique, high-risk flair to the octagon. His career also included a notable 41-second knockout of Won Jun Choi. Even in defeat, he maintained a high level of competition, facing heavyweights like Dae Sung Kim in openweight bouts.
