A collegiate athletic conference with the nation's top graduation rates
In short: In a landscape often defined by athletic prestige, the Mid-American Conference (MAC) stands out for its academic rigor. While it competes at the highest levels of NCAA Division I football and beyond, it holds a distinction that sets it apart from nearly every other major conference.
Headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, the MAC is primarily anchored in the Great Lakes region, with nine of its twelve full members located in Ohio and Michigan. Despite this regional density, the conference's footprint has expanded significantly over decades, stretching from Massachusetts to California. This geographic reach includes diverse locations such as Indiana, New York, and the West Coast.
The conference is notable for prioritizing student success alongside sports. It currently leads all ten NCAA Division I FBS conferences in terms of graduation rates. This commitment to academic achievement serves as a core identity for the organization, distinguishing it from peers that may prioritize different metrics of success.
The MAC's history is marked by complex realignment and membership shifts. For example, the University of Cincinnati resigned in 1953 because they could not meet a new requirement to schedule at least five conference football games per season. More recently, Sacramento State will join as a football-only member in July 2026 for a five-year term. This move is a strategic leap to FBS status, requiring an $18 million entry fee and a commitment to cover all air travel costs for visiting teams.
The conference also manages a complex web of affiliate memberships across various sports. It recently became the second-largest wrestling conference in 2019 by absorbing seven former members of the Eastern Wrestling League. From women's lacrosse, which debuted in 2021, to men's swimming and diving, the MAC balances multi-sport governance with a core membership that remains deeply rooted in its Midwestern origins.
