The Bosnian forward who mastered the art of the loan cycle
In short: Ermedin Demirović’s path to the top of German football wasn't a straight line. It was a nomadic journey across four countries and six different clubs in just three years. Discover how this versatile forward navigated the grueling
Demirović's career is a masterclass in professional adaptation. After developing in the youth academies of Hamburger SV and RB Leipzig, he entered a high-velocity period of movement between 2017 and 2020. During this window, he moved from Spain's Alavés to France's Sochaux, then to Spain's Almería, and finally to Switzerland's St. Gallen. This nomadic phase allowed him to accumulate diverse experience across different leagues before finding stability in the Bundesliga.
His breakthrough in Germany began with a move to SC Freiburg in July 2020, where he scored his first goal for the club on December 20 against Hertha BSC. He continued his steady ascent, joining FC Augsburg in July 2022. It was here that his leadership qualities emerged; by August 2023, he was named team captain. His move to VfB Stuttgart in July 2024 marked a new chapter, where he quickly became a key figure, scoring in his league debut against SC Freiburg and eventually winning the DFB-Pokal in May 2025.
On the international stage, Demirović has become a symbol of Bosnian football. After representing the nation at every youth level, he made his senior debut on March 24, 2021, against Finland. By 2026, he reached a historic milestone: scoring a hat-trick in the UEFA Champions League against Viking on September 9, 2026. This feat made him only the second Bosnian player to achieve such a feat in the competition, following in the footsteps of Edin Džeko.
Beyond the pitch, Demirović's journey reflects a rich cultural identity. A practicing Muslim, he has shared moments of faith with teammates like Amar Dedić and Tarik Muharemović during national team concentrations in Sarajevo. His personal life also reached a milestone in September 2024 when he married his long-time girlfriend, Sandra, with whom he shares a daughter, Leana.
