How a high school metal band from Ohio conquered the Billboard charts
In short: Formed in 2007 while the members were still in high school, Miss May I rapidly ascended from local Ohio stages to national prominence. By blending aggressive, fast-paced instrumentation with melodic vocal hooks, they carved a distinct path in the metalcore scene, eventually securing major label deals and international touring slots.
Miss May I emerged from Troy, Ohio, in 2007, quickly establishing their presence with self-released EPs and demos. Their debut full-length album, Apologies Are for the Weak, arrived in 2009 while the members were still students. The record defied expectations for a young, independent act, landing at number 76 on the Billboard 200. This early success propelled them into high-profile placements, including the Saw VI soundtrack and the video game Saints Row: The Third, cementing their status as rising stars in the metalcore genre.
The band’s sound is defined by a fusion of heavy, thrash-inspired guitar work and melodic death metal sensibilities, underpinned by the interplay between Levi Benton’s harsh vocals and the clean singing of bassist Ryan Neff. While often categorized as metalcore, the group has consistently drawn from a wide range of influences, including classic rock, hip-hop, and R&B artists like Usher and Jay-Z. This eclectic background informs their songwriting, which Benton describes as an effort to create inspirational, positive music rather than purely aggressive output.
Throughout their career, the band has navigated significant structural shifts, including multiple label changes and lineup adjustments. After years with Rise Records, they signed with SharpTone Records in 2016 and later moved to Solid State Records in 2024. Despite these transitions, the core creative vision has remained resilient. In 2024, they revisited their origins by releasing a re-recorded version of their debut album to mark its 15th anniversary, featuring guest contributions from various peers in the scene. As they look toward their eighth studio album in 2026, the band continues to refine the sound that first brought them to national attention nearly two decades ago.
