From Osaka's small shop to a global powerhouse of precision sports engineering
In short: Long before it was a global name in golf and baseball, Mizuno was a modest Japanese shop selling Western sundries. Today, the company's legacy of craftsmanship spans everything from professional-grade golf irons to experimental rocket-powered aircraft prototypes.
Founded in 1906 by Rihachi Mizuno and his brother Rizo, the company began as Mizuno Brothers, Ltd. in Osaka. What started as a retail outlet for Western goods quickly pivoted toward specialized athletic wear by 1907. The firm's commitment to manufacturing excellence was evident early on; by 1913, they were producing their own baseballs and gloves, and by 1933, they introduced the Star Line, the first Japanese-made golf clubs.
The company's history is marked by significant industrial shifts and global expansion. While the brand is now synonymous with high-performance sports gear, it also played a role in military production during World War II, manufacturing ordnance for Japan. This era of technical experimentation even included ambitious aeronautical projects, such as the Mizuno MXZ1 training glider and the Mizuno Shinryu, a proposed rocket-powered interceptor that remained in the prototype stage.
Mizuno's global footprint expanded significantly in the 20th century, notably establishing its first American factory in Los Angeles in 1961. To penetrate the competitive US baseball market in the late 1970s, they deployed a mobile 'Mizuno Baseball Workshop'—a 12-meter van staffed by Japanese craftsmen who traveled to spring training sites in Arizona and Florida to create made-to-order gloves. This dedication to precision continues in their modern golf equipment, such as the M.CRAFT series putters, which are milled from 1025 mild carbon steel.
The brand's influence on professional sports is profound. As of 2022, 13 of the 24 men's number one ranked golfers had used Mizuno equipment during their careers. Even Tiger Woods famously utilized Mizuno clubs during his first year and a half as a professional, notably winning his first Masters Tournament in 1997 using the brand's equipment.
