How a Hollywood cornfield became the stage for Major League Baseball's most cinematic tradition
In short: In the heart of Iowa, a custom-built ballpark nestled against a legendary movie set has transformed into a recurring spectacle for professional baseball. By blending nostalgic aesthetics with modern high-stakes competition, the Field of Dreams game has captivated millions, proving that the sport's history is best served in a cornfield.
The Field of Dreams game originated in Dyersville, Iowa, near the site of the iconic 1989 film. Because the original movie set could not be modified to meet professional standards without destroying its historical authenticity, organizers constructed a separate facility roughly 500 feet away. Designed by Vizion Projects and built by Gronen, the ballpark pays homage to the Chicago White Sox's former home, Comiskey Park, complete with bullpens positioned beyond the center field fence and windows in the right field wall that offer views of the surrounding corn.
The inaugural contest took place on August 12, 2021, featuring a dramatic 9–8 victory for the Chicago White Sox over the New York Yankees. The event was an immediate ratings success, drawing 5.9 million viewers on Fox—the highest for a regular-season game on the network since 2005. Following a second game in 2022 between the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds, the complex underwent a multi-year expansion. The series resumed in 2026, when the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Minnesota Twins 7–1 in a broadcast aired by Netflix.
Beyond the professional games, the site has hosted Minor League Baseball contests, such as the 2022 matchup between the Quad Cities River Bandits and Cedar Rapids Kernels. The event's atmosphere is heavily curated, often featuring players emerging from the cornfields in a nod to the film, alongside throwback uniforms and appearances by Hall of Fame legends. While the 2027 game between the Kansas City Royals and Boston Red Sox is currently scheduled, its realization remains contingent on the successful negotiation of a new collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players association.
The significance of these games lies in their ability to merge fiction with reality. By inviting fans to witness major league action in a setting that feels plucked from cinema, the league has created a unique cultural touchstone. Whether through the walk-off heroics of 2021 or the ceremonial first pitches thrown by legends like Ferguson Jenkins, the event serves as a living tribute to the sport's enduring mythology.
