In short: Every June, the NCAA Men's College World Series transforms Omaha, Nebraska, into the epicenter of collegiate baseball. While the tournament began in 1947 as a modest affair in Michigan, it has evolved into a massive, highly structured championship that defines the pinnacle of the sport for student-athletes across the country.

The tournament originated in 1947 at Hyames Field in Kalamazoo, Michigan, before a brief stint in Wichita, Kansas, in 1949. Since 1950, however, Omaha has served as the permanent home for the event. For decades, the games were played at Rosenblatt Stadium, but in 2011, the tournament moved to a new facility now known as Charles Schwab Field Omaha. This transition was solidified by a 25-year contract extension signed in 2008, ensuring the city remains the host through 2035.

The format has undergone significant expansion to accommodate the growth of Division I baseball. Initially featuring only eight teams in a simple playoff structure, the tournament now encompasses a 64-team field. Since 1999, the path to Omaha has been determined by regional and super-regional rounds, culminating in a final eight-team bracket. The championship itself is decided by a best-of-three series, a format introduced in 2003 to heighten the drama of the final showdown.

Though the event is widely recognized as the College World Series, its official designation was updated to the Men's College World Series by 2008. This change reflects a formal branding effort by the NCAA and the organizing nonprofit, CWS Omaha, Inc. Despite the prestige of the event, it faced an unprecedented disruption in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the first cancellation in its history. Today, the tournament remains a testament to the evolution of collegiate athletics, balancing deep-rooted traditions with the demands of modern sports broadcasting and competitive structure.
