The undercover life and final sacrifice of an elite Indian Army commando
In short: Major Mohit Sharma was a master of infiltration who lived as a militant to dismantle insurgent networks from within. His career culminated in a final, desperate act of bravery in the Haphruda Forest, where he gave his life to save his team, earning India's highest peacetime military honor.
Born in 1978, Mohit Sharma followed a path that led him from a civilian education in Ghaziabad to the National Defence Academy in 1995. After commissioning into the Madras Regiment in 1999, he transitioned to the elite Para Special Forces in 2002. His reputation was built on his ability to operate in the shadows; he famously infiltrated the Hizbul Mujahideen under the alias Iftikhar Bhatt. By adopting local dress and maintaining a heavy beard, he gathered critical intelligence and neutralized high-level targets, earning a Sena Medal for his gallantry.
By 2008, Sharma was deployed to Kashmir, where he led the Bravo Assault Team. On 21 March 2009, during a search operation in the dense Haphruda Forest, his unit was ambushed by militants firing from three directions. When four of his commandos were critically wounded in the initial volley, Sharma crawled through heavy fire to drag two of them to safety. Despite being shot in the chest, he continued to lead the counterattack, using grenades to eliminate two militants before taking down two more. He succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
In recognition of his actions, Sharma was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra on 26 January 2010. His legacy has since been woven into the public landscape; in 2019, a metro station in Ghaziabad was renamed in his honor. More recently, his life became the subject of legal scrutiny when his family approached the Delhi High Court regarding the 2025 film Dhurandhar. While some speculated the movie depicted his story, the filmmakers denied these claims, highlighting the ongoing tension between public interest in his heroic life and his family's desire to protect his private history.
