From Street Casting to Global Luxury Ambassador: The Multifaceted Career of Mingyu
In short: Born in Anyang in 1997, Kim Min-gyu—known as Mingyu—has evolved from a middle school trainee into a central figure of South Korean pop culture. Beyond his role as a rapper and songwriter in the group Seventeen, he has become a dominant force in international luxury fashion and global brand marketing.
Mingyu’s trajectory began in October 2011 when he was street-cast by Pledis Entertainment while still in middle school. His early development was uniquely transparent; he participated in Seventeen TV, an online reality show broadcast on Ustream that allowed fans to watch trainees hone their singing, choreography, and performance skills before the group's official 2015 debut. This period of public preparation laid the groundwork for his eventual emergence as a versatile performer within the Seventeen hip hop team.
Since the group's debut with the extended play 17 Carat in May 2015, Mingyu has expanded his creative footprint, contributing to the songwriting of over 45 tracks. His career has diversified significantly beyond music. Between February 2018 and late 2019, he served as an MC for the SBS music program Inkigayo. He has also explored collaborative projects, such as the 2021 digital single Bittersweet with bandmate Wonwoo, and in 2025, he debuted in a new sub-unit called CxM alongside S.Coups, releasing the EP Hype Vibes.
In recent years, Mingyu has established himself as a prominent figure in the luxury sector. His influence spans high-end fashion and beauty, marked by ambassadorships with brands including Bvlgari, Dior, Lancome, and L'Occitane. His reach is truly global, extending from runway shows in Tokyo and Paris to campaigns for Calvin Klein and regional partnerships with brands like Snickers and Allo Bank. This transition from a trainee to a high-profile brand ambassador reflects the shifting landscape of modern celebrity, where musical talent and luxury market presence are increasingly intertwined.
