In short: In the heart of the Persian Empire, one man’s defiance sparked a chain reaction that averted a genocide. Mordecai didn't just save his own life; he orchestrated a political reversal so profound it remains the foundation of a major religious festival today.

Mordecai was a Jewish exile living in Susa, the metropolis of Persia, during the reign of King Ahasuerus (Xerxes I). As the cousin and foster father of Esther, he played a pivotal role in her rise to the throne. Before she became queen, Mordecai instructed her to conceal her Jewish heritage, a strategic move that allowed her to navigate the dangerous waters of the Persian court.

The conflict escalated when Haman, the king's chief minister, demanded universal prostration. Mordecai refused to bow, citing his identity as a Jew. This slight incensed Haman, who plotted not only to execute Mordecai but to annihilate all Jews throughout the empire. To formalize this, Haman used 'purim'—the casting of lots—to select a date in the month of Adar for the massacre.

The narrative shifts when Mordecai discovers an assassination plot against the king by two chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh. By foiling this threat, he gains the leverage needed to communicate Haman's genocide plan to Esther. Together, they persuade the king to retract the extermination order. In a dramatic reversal of fate, Haman is executed on the very gallows he built for Mordecai.

While traditionally viewed as historical figures, some scholars suggest the Book of Esther may be an etiology for Purim, potentially representing Babylonian gods Marduk and Ishtar in a historicized myth. Others point to a Persian inscription mentioning an official named 'Marduka' during Xerxes I's reign as possible evidence of the name's contemporary use.
