From Derby Academy to Colorado: The Global Trajectory of Morgan Whittaker
In short: Morgan Whittaker has navigated a complex professional path, evolving from a Derby County academy prospect into a record-breaking Designated Player in Major League Soccer. His career is defined by high-stakes transfers, prolific scoring streaks, and a recent move to the Colorado Rapids that underscores his international footballing journey.
Born in 2001, Morgan Whittaker began his professional journey at Derby County, making his senior debut in August 2019. His early career was marked by steady integration into the first team, including a goal on the final day of the 2019–20 season. By February 2021, he had secured a move to Swansea City, where he quickly made an impact by scoring on his FA Cup debut against Manchester City. However, his development truly accelerated during subsequent loan spells, particularly at Plymouth Argyle, where he became a central figure.
Whittaker’s time at Plymouth Argyle proved transformative. During a loan spell in the 2022–23 season, he recorded nine goals and seven assists in 25 appearances, earning the EFL League One Player of the Month award for September 2022. After a brief recall to Swansea, he returned to Plymouth permanently in July 2023 for a club-record fee of approximately £1 million. This second stint was highly productive; he scored 20 goals in 50 appearances across all competitions during the 2023–24 season, earning him a spot in the EFL Championship Team of the Season and the club's Player of the Season award.
The trajectory of his career shifted again in January 2025 with a move to Middlesbrough for a reported fee of £5 million plus add-ons. Following a period in the Championship, Whittaker transitioned to Major League Soccer in September 2026, signing a Designated Player contract with the Colorado Rapids. The deal, valued at a reported $10.7 million, represented a club-record fee for the Rapids. His immediate impact in the United States was evident when he scored a brace in a 3–3 draw against the Seattle Sounders just weeks after his arrival, marking the latest chapter in a career defined by consistent movement and goal-scoring output.
