The band that traded record labels for a $341,000 crowdfunding success
In short: In 2013, the Canadian progressive metal band Protest the Hero decided to bypass the traditional music industry entirely. By taking matters into their own hands via Indiegogo, they didn't just fund an album; they nearly tripled their goal in just 30 hours, redefining independent artistic autonomy.
Formed in Whitby, Ontario, in 1999 as Happy Go Lucky, the band transitioned into Protest the Hero by 2001. Their early trajectory was marked by rapid growth and technical ambition. By 2005, they released their debut album 'Kezia,' a concept work described by the members as a "situationist requiem." The album earned universal acclaim for its complexity and the vocal range of frontman Rody Walker, establishing them as a formidable force in the progressive metal scene.
The band's relationship with the industry became a point of friction. In January 2013, frustrated with traditional record labels, they announced a plan to crowdfund their fourth album, 'Volition.' The campaign was an immediate success, reaching its $125,000 goal in only 30 hours and ultimately raising $341,146. This move allowed them to maintain creative control, though it coincided with significant lineup shifts, including the departure of founding drummer Moe Carlson and bassist Arif Mirabdolbaghi.
Protest the Hero has continued to experiment with distribution models since then. In 2015, they released 'Pacific Myth' as a subscription-based EP on Bandcamp, releasing tracks monthly to paid subscribers. Despite facing significant hurdles—including Rody Walker’s vocal issues in 2018 that delayed their fifth album, 'Palimpsest'—the band eventually released 'Within' in July 2026. This latest work marks a milestone as the first material the band fully owns.
Their history is also punctuated by unique logistical challenges. While touring alongside Trivium and The Sword in 2006, Luke Hoskin faced detention at the US–Vancouver boundary for a tiny amount of marijuana (under 0.2 grams), necessitating that the group hire a substitute from Hypodust to finish their dates.
