The investigation revealed that the attack was motivated by the couple's appearance. Police noted that their gothic fashion and accessories made them stand out. The brutality was such that witnesses described the attackers repeatedly kicking and stomping on Sophie's head while she was defenseless. The attackers were identified as five teenagers. The prosecution argued they were targeted for their appearance. Witnesses observed the attackers kicking her head repeatedly. The police believed the couple's gothic style motivated the assault.
