The complex reality behind the cameras of the weight-loss series My 600-lb Life
In short: Since 2012, My 600-lb Life has documented the extreme weight-loss journeys of morbidly obese individuals under the care of Houston surgeon Younan Nowzaradan. While the show tracks these intense medical transformations, the production has faced significant legal scrutiny and public questions regarding the long-term well-being of its participants.
The series, which aired on TLC from 2012 to 2025, centers on patients who typically weigh at least 600 pounds. Under the supervision of Dr. Nowzaradan, participants are tasked with following a strict diet before potentially undergoing bariatric procedures like gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy. The format has evolved significantly since its inception as a five-part miniseries; while the first season followed patients over a seven-year span from 2004 to 2011, later seasons condensed the filming period to one year, with some stories in Season 8 captured over just six months.
Beyond the primary narrative, the franchise expanded to include follow-up episodes titled Where Are They Now?, which debuted in 2015, and the spin-off Skin Tight, which premiered in 2016 to address the physical aftermath of massive weight loss. Despite the show's popularity, it has been marked by tragedy and controversy. Twenty-five patients have died since appearing on the program. Furthermore, the production company, Megalomedia, faced legal challenges starting in 2018.
These legal battles involved ten separate lawsuits from former patients and the family of L.B. Bonner, who died by suicide. Plaintiffs alleged negligence, specifically claiming that the production company failed to cover promised medical costs or provide necessary mental health support. One notable plaintiff, Destinee LaShaee, the show's first transgender participant, died in 2022 after expressing struggles with depression. Although these ten lawsuits were consolidated into a single proceeding in 2020, the 13th Appellate Court of Texas ultimately dismissed all of them on April 14, 2022, following a failed summary judgment motion by the production company.
