Before he was a wrestling star, Mustafa Ali worked night shifts as a policeman.
In short: Adeel Alam, known globally as Mustafa Ali, balanced a dangerous double life for years. While competing on the independent wrestling circuit by day, he served as a police officer in a Chicago suburb by night. Today, he is a decorated champion who actively challenges industry stereotypes through his high-flying persona.
Born in 1986 to Indian and Pakistani parents, Adeel Alam grew up in Chicago with a singular ambition: professional wrestling. Before achieving mainstream success, he spent four years working night shifts as a police officer in Homewood, Illinois. During his early independent career, he famously wore a mask to avoid discrimination, a pragmatic choice that allowed him to pursue his craft while supporting his family.
Alam’s breakthrough came in 2016 when he joined WWE's Cruiserweight Classic. His tenure there was defined by technical skill and a refusal to lean into tired tropes. He famously rejected the industry's tendency to typecast Muslim wrestlers as villains, instead advocating for unity over nationalistic labels. Even when criticized by fans for not waving a specific flag, he maintained that nationality should not define human identity.
After his departure from WWE in 2023, Alam reinvented himself on the independent circuit and later in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). He adopted a satirical politician gimmick—complete with Secret Service-style bodyguards and the slogan 'In Ali We Trust!'—which he had previously pitched to WWE creative teams. Beyond the ring, he continues to shape the next generation, having opened the Chicago Wrestling Center in 2024.
Today, Ali is a two-time TNA International Champion and remains a prominent figure in professional wrestling. His career reflects a deliberate effort to subvert expectations, from his early days as a masked performer to his current status as a veteran who balances high-stakes competition with a commitment to his personal values and his family.
