The UFC champion who was once mistaken for an over-excited fan by security
In short: Belal Muhammad rose from a Chicago wrestling background to become the first UFC champion of Palestinian descent. Yet, even after claiming the welterweight title, he faced the surreal indignity of being blocked from the Octagon by arena security who failed to recognize him as the reigning champion during a public event.
Born in 1988 to Palestinian parents in Chicago, Belal Muhammad’s path to professional fighting began on the mats of Bogan High School. After graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with aspirations of becoming a lawyer, he transitioned into mixed martial arts. He entered the UFC in 2016 following a successful run in the Titan Fighting Championships, where he maintained an undefeated 9–0 record.
Muhammad’s career has been defined by high-stakes bouts and significant milestones. He achieved the status of UFC Welterweight Champion in July 2024 by defeating Leon Edwards. His technical proficiency is reflected in his record-tying 11 unanimous decision victories in the UFC welterweight division, a feat he shares with Kamaru Usman. Beyond the cage, Muhammad is a vocal advocate for Palestine, frequently carrying the Palestinian flag during weigh-ins and speaking out on regional crises.
Despite his professional stature, Muhammad has navigated unusual challenges. In December 2024, while sidelined by a foot infection, he attempted to face off with contender Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310. Security personnel, unaware of his identity, barred his entry, leading to a public intervention by commentator Joe Rogan. The incident sparked widespread social media commentary, including mockery from Conor McGregor regarding Muhammad's public profile. This moment underscored the strange disconnect that can exist between elite athletic achievement and mainstream celebrity recognition.
Muhammad’s tenure as champion ended in May 2025 following a loss to Jack Della Maddalena. Since then, he has continued to compete across various platforms, including grappling events like RAF 11. His career remains a study in perseverance, marked by both tactical success—such as his Performance of the Night honors—and the unpredictable nature of fame in the modern sports landscape.
