In short: In 1969, a forgotten blues shuffle from a disbanded doo-wop group was resurrected as a B-side. It never intended to be a hit, yet it eventually displaced the Beatles on the charts and became a global anthem for mocking defeat.

The song's origins date back to the early 1960s in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Paul Leka, Gary DeCarlo, and Dale Frashuer were members of a doo-wop group called the Glenwoods (later the Citations and the Chateaus). They wrote a blues shuffle version of 'Kiss Him Goodbye' during this era. The track lay dormant until 1969, when Leka and DeCarlo—now working in New York City—needed a B-side for a single called 'Sweet Laura Lee.' They reached back to their old material and recruited Frashuer to record the track. The recording was a masterclass in studio efficiency. Instead of a live band, Leka played keyboards while engineer Warren Dewey spliced together a drum track from one of DeCarlo's other singles and a conga solo from a completely different session in Bridgeport. Leka admitted he wrote the 'na na na' hook while sitting at the piano because he simply didn't have any lyrics. To make the song longer, he added a chorus, and DeCarlo contributed the 'hey hey' interjections. Despite the songwriters' expectations, Mercury Records executive Bob Reno insisted the song be the A-side. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on December 6, 1969, knocking out the Beatles' 'Come Together.' While it became a multi-platinum success with over 6.5 million records sold by the 21st century, its cultural legacy shifted toward sports. Nancy Faust, an organist for the Chicago White Sox, started performing the tune consistently during 1977, establishing it as a mockery for pitching substitutions, removed athletes, or defeated clubs in baseball.
