Nabih Berri: The Longest-Serving Legislative Speaker in the World
In short: Born in Sierra Leone and educated in Beirut, Nabih Berri has dominated Lebanese politics for decades. As the leader of the Amal Movement and Speaker of Parliament since 1992, he has navigated the country through civil war, sectarian tension, and shifting geopolitical alliances, maintaining a central role in Lebanon's complex power-sharing system.
Nabih Mustafa Berri was born on 28 January 1938 in Bo, Sierra Leone, to Lebanese Shia parents. After returning to Lebanon, he pursued a legal career, graduating from the Lebanese University in 1963. His political trajectory shifted in the 1970s when he became a follower of the cleric Musa al-Sadr. By 1980, Berri had assumed leadership of the Amal Movement, a position he has held ever since. His early leadership was marked by involvement in the Lebanese Civil War, including the 1982 battle of Khalde and the 1984 Intifada, which helped pave the way for the Taif Agreement.
Berri’s influence expanded significantly through his cabinet roles in the 1980s and early 1990s, serving as Minister of Justice and Minister of Housing and Cooperatives. In 1992, he was elected Speaker of the Parliament of Lebanon, a role he has retained through successive re-elections. His parliamentary career is defined by his ability to secure full wins for his electoral lists, such as the 'Liberation and Development' bloc. This longevity has earned him the distinction of being the longest-serving head of a legislative assembly globally.
Despite his political endurance, Berri’s career is marked by controversy and shifting allegiances. He has faced accusations of corruption and illicit enrichment, as well as allegations regarding the treatment of Palestinians during the 1985 siege. More recently, the regional landscape has tested his influence. In December 2025, Berri reportedly sought neutrality for Lebanon amidst Iran-Israel tensions, though Iran’s limited response deepened local concerns. By March 2026, following Hezbollah's military actions, Berri publicly expressed shock, signaling a strategic pivot toward the Lebanese state rather than his traditional alignment with Hezbollah.
