A political revival built on language rather than shared heritage
In short: In the complex landscape of Indian politics, one party argues that identity isn't about ancestry—it is strictly about language. By rejecting the broader Dravidian identity in favor of a linguistic Tamil nationalism, the Naam Tamilar Katchi seeks to redefine who has the right to govern.
Founded in 1958 by S. P. Adithanar, the original We Tamils party was built on the platform of Tamil nationalism. It played a pivotal role in the campaign to rename Madras State to Tamil Nadu. However, after Adithanar joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in 1967, the movement lay dormant until its revival in 2010 by actor-turned-politician Seeman. The modern Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) positions itself as a distinct alternative to mainstream Dravidian parties, which it blames for the historical decline of Tamil interests.
The party’s ideology is centered on a specific distinction: while anyone may live in Tamil Nadu, only a Tamil has the right to govern it. Seeman justifies this by pointing out that many former chief ministers were not originally Tamil. This stance has sparked significant debate; critics from Dravidian parties have labeled the rhetoric as racist and divisive, while others view it as a necessary defense of cultural dignity against suppression.
Beyond domestic governance, the NTK is deeply involved in regional advocacy. It supports the creation of an independent Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka and idolizes Velupillai Prabhakaran, founder of the LTTE. The party also focuses on socio-economic issues like water rights from the Kaveri River, opposition to illegal sand mining, and a commitment to social justice, including LGBTQ rights and equal representation for women—allocating half of its contested seats to female candidates.
The NTK has seen steady growth in electoral visibility. After contesting its first election in 2011 with no seats won, it received about 3.1% of the vote in the 2019 general elections. By the 2021 assembly elections, Seeman’s personal candidacy in Thiruvottiyur placed third with 24.4% of the votes. The party is now preparing to contest solo across all constituencies in the upcoming 2026 state elections.
