Why Netflix's most chaotic baking show celebrates the beauty of total culinary failure
In short: Nailed It! turns the internet's obsession with Pinterest-perfect cakes on its head. Instead of professional pastry chefs, the show pits three amateur bakers with notoriously poor skills against one another. The goal is to recreate elaborate, professional-grade confections, resulting in hilarious, messy, and often unrecognizable edible disasters.
Launched on Netflix in March 2018, the series taps into the cultural phenomenon of people attempting to replicate complex internet recipes only to fail spectacularly. Each 35-minute episode features two distinct rounds. In the first, Baker's Choice, contestants select one of three treats to mimic. The second round, Nail It or Fail It, gives participants two hours to build a complicated cake from scratch. To add pressure, contestants can use a Panic Button for three minutes of expert guidance from hosts Nicole Byer and Jacques Torres.
The production has faced significant real-world challenges. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the show adapted by implementing social distancing in the kitchens and replacing the traditional rectangular judging table with a semi-circle. In 2022, production was suspended indefinitely after crew members walked off the job to demand a union agreement with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. This labor action impacted the seventh season, which saw its planned eight-episode run cut in half.
Despite the chaos, the show has earned critical acclaim, including five Primetime Emmy nominations. Nicole Byer’s recognition for Outstanding Host made her the first Black woman to receive a nomination in that category. The format has proven globally adaptable, spawning versions in Mexico, France, Spain, and Germany. Whether through a mobile game or international spin-offs, the series remains a testament to the idea that sometimes, the effort—and the resulting mess—is far more entertaining than the intended masterpiece.
