In short: The 2022 Netflix series Narco-Saints, inspired by true events, follows a civilian businessman forced into a high-stakes undercover mission to capture a drug lord in Suriname. While the show aimed for global success, its depiction of the nation triggered an official diplomatic protest and legal threats from the Surinamese government.

Directed by Yoon Jong-bin and released on September 9, 2022, the series—originally titled Suriname—centers on Kang In-gu, an entrepreneur who travels to the country for a skate business venture. He is soon recruited by the National Intelligence Service to infiltrate the operation of Jeon Yo-hwan, a South Korean drug kingpin who masquerades as a pastor while controlling the local narcotics trade. The narrative features a corrupt president who seized power through a military coup facilitated by the drug lord, alongside a cast of enforcers, lawyers, and gang leaders.

The production, which cost an estimated ₩35 billion, faced significant logistical hurdles due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the story is set in Suriname, filming took place in South Korea and the Dominican Republic. The series was rebranded as Narco-Saints for English-speaking audiences to capitalize on the popularity of Netflix's existing Narcos franchise, a marketing strategy that ultimately linked the show to a global perception of drug-related crime.

The backlash from the Surinamese government was swift. Officials argued that the series unfairly portrayed their nation as a hub for drug trafficking, damaging its international reputation. The Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed deep displeasure, threatening legal action against the producers and planning a formal protest to the US ambassador. The situation escalated to the point where the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs had to intervene to address the diplomatic friction, citing concerns for the safety of local residents. Despite the controversy, the series holds a 71% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
