The accidental guitar tuning that defined a nineties rock anthem
In short: When Johnny Rzeznik sat on his couch twisting tuning pegs, he had no idea he was crafting a chart-topping hit. By replacing a standard string with a high E, he created a unique sonic texture that became the signature sound of the Goo Goo Dolls' breakout success, Name.
Released in September 1995 as the third single from the album A Boy Named Goo, Name marked a turning point for the Goo Goo Dolls. The track climbed to the top of the US Modern Rock and Album Rock charts, while peaking at number five on the Billboard Hot 100. Its success extended into Canada, where it reached the top spot on the RPM Alternative 30 and number two on the RPM 100 Hit Tracks chart. By October 2012, Billboard recognized its enduring legacy by placing it at number 24 on their list of the top 100 pop songs from 1992 to 2012.
The song's distinctive sound stems from an unconventional D-A-E-A-E-E guitar tuning. Rzeznik achieved this by swapping the standard B string for a high E string, noting that attempting to tune a regular B string up to E caused too much tension and breakage. He described the composition as an accidental discovery; while randomly adjusting his pegs, he lost track of the notes and used a tuner to record the resulting configuration. He then allowed his fingers to explore the fretboard, which birthed the song's progression.
Beyond its technical origins, the song carries a personal history. Former MTV personality Kennedy revealed in her memoir, The Kennedy Chronicles, that the lyrics were inspired by her complex relationship with Rzeznik. Rzeznik confirmed this inspiration, describing the track as an attempt to capture a specific, sweet moment in time. He later reaffirmed this connection during a 2025 interview with Zach Sang. The band's broader impact is cemented by their unique standing in pop history; they remain the only artists to place three songs in Billboard's top 25 pop songs list, including the chart-topping Iris and the top-ten hit Slide.
