How Naomi transformed from an NBA dancer into a decorated professional wrestling champion
In short: Before she was a multi-time champion in WWE and TNA, Trinity Fatu was a professional dancer for the Orlando Magic and rapper Flo Rida. Her transition from the basketball court to the squared circle redefined her career, blending athletic precision with a high-energy persona that captivated global audiences for years.
Born Trinity LaShawn McCray in Sanford, Florida, Naomi’s journey into professional wrestling began in 2009 when she signed with WWE. Initially assigned to Florida Championship Wrestling, she quickly distinguished herself as the inaugural FCW Divas Champion in 2010. Her early career was marked by a rapid ascent, including a second-place finish in the third season of NXT and a main roster debut in 2012 as part of The Funkadactyls. This period established her as a dynamic performer, though her path was rarely linear, involving various character shifts, injuries, and high-profile feuds.
Naomi’s career is defined by her adaptability and resilience. She famously debuted 'The Glow' gimmick in 2016, a vibrant persona that revitalized her standing and led to three reigns as the SmackDown Women's Champion. Beyond WWE, she demonstrated her versatility by joining TNA Wrestling in 2023 under the name Trinity. During her tenure there, she captured the TNA Knockouts World Championship, holding the title for 182 days. Her ability to command the ring across different promotions highlights a rare consistency in an industry often defined by volatility and shifting creative directions.
The athlete's personal life and professional identity are deeply intertwined with the wrestling world. Married to fellow wrestler Jimmy Uso in 2014, she became part of the prominent Anoaʻi family dynasty. Her career has also extended into reality television and film, notably through her long-term role on the series Total Divas and her appearance in The Marine 5: Battleground. Despite facing numerous challenges, including creative disputes that led to a high-profile departure from WWE in 2022 and a return in 2024, Naomi remains a central figure in modern wrestling, recently balancing her championship pursuits with significant life milestones such as her 2025 pregnancy announcement.
