From a small theater chain to a media titan, the Redstone family legacy ends
In short: For nearly nine decades, the Redstone family controlled a sprawling media empire through National Amusements. What began as a modest regional theater chain in 1936 eventually became the gatekeeper of Paramount Global. In 2025, this era of family control concluded with a high-stakes merger, reshaping the landscape of American entertainment.
Founded in 1936 by Michael Redstone as the Northeast Theater Corporation in Dedham, Massachusetts, the company initially focused on regional cinema operations. It was not until 1959, when his son Sumner Redstone joined, that it adopted the name National Amusements. Under the Redstones, the firm evolved from a theater operator into a powerful media holding company, eventually securing a 79.9% voting interest in Paramount Global.
The company's history is defined by aggressive expansion and complex restructuring. In 1987, it acquired a majority stake in Viacom, which later ballooned through the acquisition of Paramount Communications in 1994, the merger with CBS in 2000, and the purchase of BET in 2001. By 2005, facing stock price pressures, the company split its media assets into two distinct entities, Viacom and CBS, both of which remained under its control. These entities later re-merged in 2019 to form ViacomCBS, which was rebranded as Paramount Global in 2022.
Financial volatility often dictated the company's trajectory. In 2008 and 2009, the Redstones were forced to sell significant portions of their stock and theater assets to manage debt. The final chapter of the family's control began in 2024, when David Ellison’s Skydance Media announced plans to acquire National Amusements for $2.4 billion. This deal, finalized on August 7, 2025, saw National Amusements absorbed into the newly formed Paramount Skydance Corporation, marking the end of nearly 90 years of Redstone family stewardship.
