In short: Founded in 2000 with a modest capital of 100 million won, Netmarble has transformed from a struggling game developer into a massive conglomerate. Today, the company navigates a volatile gaming market by leveraging strategic investments in entertainment and home appliance rentals to secure its financial future and corporate stability.

Netmarble was established in 2000 by Bang Jun-hyuk, who took over the struggling developer Ipopsoft. After an early acquisition by CJ Group in 2004 and a brief departure, Bang returned in 2011 to pivot the company toward mobile gaming. This shift proved lucrative; by 2015, the company employed over 3,000 people and operated in more than 120 countries, with titles like Lineage 2: Revolution generating over $924 million in revenue within its first 11 months.

The company's strategy evolved to include significant cross-industry investments. In 2020, Netmarble completed a 1.74 trillion won acquisition of the home appliance rental firm Coway. By April 2026, the company moved to increase its stake in Coway to 29.1%. This move was designed to secure a stable dividend-paying 'cash cow' to hedge against the inherent volatility of the gaming industry, while simultaneously blocking activist investors from challenging its corporate governance.

Financial management has become a central focus, particularly regarding debt from the acquisition of SpinX. Netmarble has utilized its stake in Hybe Corporation—originally purchased in 2018—as a financial tool. While an attempt to issue 2.5 trillion won in exchangeable bonds was canceled in August 2025 due to stock volatility, the company has successfully reduced its SpinX-related debt to the mid-200 billion won range. In August 2026, Bang Jun-hyuk further solidified his control by acquiring an additional 13.4% stake from Tencent, bringing his total shareholding to 38.34% to ensure responsible management and mitigate market uncertainty.
