In short: Once a powerhouse of MMORPGs like Lineage, NCSoft has faced a turbulent journey. From high-stakes lawsuits and billion-dollar damages to a massive restructuring in 2024, the South Korean giant is reinventing itself through a multi-studio system to regain its footing.

Founded in March 1997 by Kim Taek-jin, NCSoft became a titan of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) genre. The company achieved global recognition through titles such as Lineage, launched in September 1998, and later Guild Wars. However, its path was marked by intense legal battles. In 2010, a Texas jury awarded Richard Garriott $32 million in total damages following a dispute over his termination and the failure of the $84.4 million project Tabula Rasa. Additionally, the company faced a patent infringement lawsuit from Worlds.com regarding virtual world scalability, which settled in 2010.

The company's scale has also invited significant risk. In 2007, Seoul Metropolitan Police investigated seven former employees for allegedly selling the Lineage III source code to a Japanese firm, with potential damages estimated to exceed $1 billion. By 2021, NCSoft had expanded into the entertainment industry via its subsidiary Klap Co., Ltd., launching the UNIVERSE platform. Despite these expansions, the company faced persistent financial challenges, including an 11-year deficit at its subsidiary Ntreev Soft.

To combat these issues, NCSoft underwent a major reconstruction in 2024, which included laying off 70 employees at Ntreev Soft in January. By February 2025, the company officially transitioned into an independent multi-studio system. This new structure includes specialized units like NC AI, which develops the Varco Large Language Model, and FirstSpark Games, which manages the Throne and Liberty IP. This strategic shift, aimed at shortening development cycles and returning to profitability, saw the company's name officially changed to NC on April 2, 2026.
