The FDNY's lineage traces back to Dutch chimney wardens of 1648
In short: Before the high-rises and modern sirens, New York’s fire defense was a system of fines and leather buckets. The city’s oldest fire company has survived since 1784, maintaining a continuous existence through revolutions, the transition from volunteer to paid service, and the consolidation of five boroughs.
The origins of the FDNY are rooted in the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam. In 1648, Peter Stuyvesant appointed four fire wardens to inspect wooden chimneys. Owners with improperly swept chimneys faced penalties, which financed hooks, ladders, and buckets. By 1658, local shoemakers produced 250 leather shoe buckets for 'bucket brigades' known as the rattle watch—men who patrolled streets from nine in the evening until dawn.
The transition to a professional force was marked by significant milestones. In 1731, the first fire brigade entered service with two hand-drawn pumpers from London. By 1737, the colony created a Volunteer Fire Department where men served in exchange for jury and militia exemptions. However, it wasn't until March 20, 1798, that the entity was legally incorporated as the 'Fire Department, City of New York.'
A major shift occurred in 1865 when a state act abolished the volunteer system to create a paid department. This move was won by insurance companies and caused significant friction, leading to street fights between bitter former volunteers and the new paid staff. The current FDNY structure emerged from this consolidation, eventually unifying all five boroughs under one command in 1898. Notably, Hook and Ladder Company No. 1 has maintained a continuous existence since June 16, 1784, surviving even the British invasion of 1776.
Today, the FDNY is the largest municipal fire department in the Western Hemisphere. It operates with a paramilitary structure, employing over 11,000 uniformed firefighters and 4,500 EMS personnel to serve more than 8.5 million residents across 302 square miles.
