The high-stakes rotation of power in Karnataka's legislative landscape
In short: Political stability often rests on unspoken agreements. In Karnataka, a leadership transition was fueled by an internal power-sharing understanding that saw a shift from Siddaramaiah to D. K. Shivakumar. Now, as the 2028 elections approach, the state watches a government defined by strategic internal maneuvering.
The current political landscape in Karnataka is defined by a transition that many observers viewed as a pre-planned rotation. Following the 2023 Assembly election, the Indian National Congress formed a government with Siddaramaiah as chief minister. During this period, D. K. Shivakumar served as deputy chief minister and held the role of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president. While never formally announced, it was widely believed that an internal understanding existed to rotate leadership partway through the term, eventually elevating Shivakumar to the top post.
This transition became a focal point of intense speculation starting in late 2025. The shift culminated in May 2026, when the Congress high command directed Siddaramaiah to resign. Following his departure on 28 May 2026, the resignation was approved by Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot one day later. Siddaramaiah endorsed the choice as Shivakumar secured the Congress Legislature Party leadership by 30 May 2026 during a Vidhana Soudha gathering in Bengaluru. He was subsequently sworn in as chief minister on June 3, 2026, joined by G. Parameshwara as deputy chief minister.
Looking ahead, the next Karnataka Legislative Assembly election is expected to occur by May 2028 to elect all 224 members. However, the timeline remains fluid. While the Election Commission of India has not formally notified a date as of August 2026, the opposition has introduced a layer of uncertainty. In late May 2026, BJP state president B. Y. Vijayendra suggested the possibility of mid-term polls, though the party leadership has not confirmed any specific plans or evidence to support such a move.
