From rejection for his height to becoming Vietnam's most decorated young football talent
In short: Released by his childhood academy at age 14 because he stood only 1.50 meters tall, Nguyen Dinh Bac defied expectations to become a central figure in Vietnamese football. Today, the versatile forward is celebrated for his agility, technical dribbling, and a historic string of individual honors across both club and international stages.
Born in 2004, Nguyen Dinh Bac faced an early setback in 2018 when the Song Lam Nghe An youth academy released him due to his small stature. After moving to Quang Nam province in 2019, he rebuilt his career, eventually debuting for the senior team in 2023. His rise was rapid; he became the youngest player to win the V.League 2 Player of the Season award while helping his club secure the league title. Despite occasional disciplinary challenges that saw him briefly sidelined by his club, his on-field impact remained undeniable.
Dinh Bac is defined by his versatility, operating effectively as a winger, striker, or attacking midfielder. His playing style, often compared to 2017 Vietnamese Golden Ball winner Dinh Thanh Trung, relies on explosive dribbling and the ability to maintain balance under physical pressure. These traits have made him a consistent offensive threat, capable of both finishing plays and acting as a primary playmaker for his teams.
His international career has been marked by a series of historic milestones. In 2023, he became the first player born in 2004 to represent the Vietnam national team. By 2026, he had cemented his status as a national star, winning the ASEAN Championship with Vietnam while earning both the tournament's Most Valuable Player award and a share of the top-scorer title. His trajectory from a discarded youth prospect to a decorated professional highlights a rare combination of technical skill and resilience in the face of early professional rejection.
