From collegiate three-point specialist to NBA champion: the unconventional rise of Nick Nurse
In short: Nick Nurse’s journey to the pinnacle of professional basketball was anything but linear. Before securing an NBA title as a head coach, he honed his craft across international leagues and the G League. His path proves that elite coaching success is often built on years of persistence in the sport's trenches.
Long before he became a prominent figure in the NBA, Nick Nurse established himself as a standout athlete at the University of Northern Iowa. Between 1985 and 1989, he excelled as a marksman, graduating in 1990 as the school's all-time leader in three-point shooting accuracy, hitting nearly 47 percent of his attempts. His early connection to the university was deep, influenced by his brother Ken, who played baseball for the Panthers. Following his playing days, Nurse transitioned immediately into coaching, serving as a student assistant during the 1989-1990 season and helping the team reach its inaugural NCAA Tournament.
Nurse’s professional coaching career began at age 23 when he took the helm at Grand View University, making him the youngest collegiate head coach in the United States at the time. He later spent 11 seasons coaching in the British Basketball League, where he secured two championships and earned two Coach of the Year honors. This international experience was followed by a return to the United States in 2007 to coach the Iowa Energy. His success in the G League—which included a 2011 championship and Coach of the Year award—laid the groundwork for his eventual transition to the NBA.
In 2013, Nurse joined the Toronto Raptors as an assistant, eventually being promoted to head coach in 2018. His impact was immediate; he led the franchise to its first NBA championship in 2019. This achievement made him the first coach to win titles in both the NBA and the G League. Following his tenure in Toronto, Nurse continued his career by becoming the head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers in 2023. His trajectory from a small-college player to a championship-winning NBA coach serves as a testament to the value of working through diverse coaching environments.
