From a historic Georgia settlement to NFL stardom, the legacy of Nick Chubb
In short: Nick Chubb retired in 2026 as a Cleveland Browns legend, but his story began long before his professional career. Named after his great-grandfather, he descends from the founders of Chubbtown, a resilient community of free Black settlers in Georgia that survived the American Civil War and remains a testament to endurance.
Born in 1995, Nicholas Jamaal Chubb emerged from a family deeply rooted in football. His athletic journey began at Cedartown High School, where he excelled in both track and field and football, amassing nearly 7,000 rushing yards during his prep career. He continued this dominance at the University of Georgia, where he became the second-leading rusher in SEC history, trailing only the legendary Herschel Walker. Despite a severe knee injury in 2015, Chubb’s resilience defined his collegiate tenure, leading the Bulldogs to an SEC title and a Rose Bowl victory in 2017.
Drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2018, Chubb quickly established himself as a premier running back. His rookie season featured a 92-yard touchdown run, the longest in the franchise's history. Over eight seasons in the NFL, he earned four Pro Bowl selections and a second-team All-Pro honor in 2022. Known for his explosive power, he became the first Browns player since Jim Brown in 1958 to record a touchdown run of at least 40 yards against the Steelers. By the time he concluded his tenure in Cleveland, he ranked third in franchise history with 6,843 rushing yards.
Chubb’s career was marked by significant physical challenges, including a major knee injury in 2015 and a season-ending knee injury in 2023. After returning to the field in 2024, he finished his career with a final season playing for the Houston Texans in 2025. Beyond his on-field achievements, Chubb engaged in philanthropic efforts, such as launching his own breakfast cereal, Chubb Crunch, to support the First Candle charity dedicated to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome awareness. He officially retired in August 2026, signing a one-day contract to conclude his career as a member of the Cleveland Browns.
