By age 15, Nurse stood nearly 6 feet 4 inches and weighed 176 pounds, physical traits that helped him dominate as a defenceman for the Don Mills Flyers. His trajectory accelerated after being selected third overall in the 2011 OHL Priority Selection by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. By 2013, the Edmonton Oilers drafted him seventh overall. His professional career saw significant milestones, including a $74 million, eight-year contract extension signed in 2021, before he was traded to the San Jose Sharks in 2026.
Beyond his club success, Nurse has been a consistent presence for Canada, winning gold at the 2015 World Junior Championships and silver at the 2019 World Championship. In 2020, he made headlines for his social advocacy, joining teammate Malcolm Subban in supporting Matt Dumba as he knelt during the national anthem to protest racism.
