How a Scottish fighter climbed to the pinnacle of ONE Championship
In short: From discovering Muay Thai at 15 to becoming a world champion, Nico Carrillo's ascent has been defined by clinical precision and power. His journey through the ranks of ONE Championship and multiple world titles highlights a rapid evolution from a Glasgow trainee to a global combat sports star.
Born on 17 October 1998, Nico Carrillo began his combat sports journey with boxing before transitioning to Muay Thai at the age of 15. Training at the Glasgow Thai Boxing Academy, he quickly moved through the competitive ranks. His early career included a victory over Paul Barbour in March 2016 and a fourth-round knockout of Shane Farqharson in December 2017. Despite a hiatus in 2018 due to recurring injuries, Carrillo's momentum proved unstoppable once he committed to a full-time fighting career in 2019.
Carrillo's championship pedigree is extensive. He has secured titles across various organizations, including the ISKA Muay Thai World 65 kg title, the WBC Muay Thai European Welterweight title, and the WMO Welterweight and Super Welterweight world titles. His dominance in the ring is often marked by significant finishes; for instance, his victory over Saemapetch Fairtex in July 2024 involved scoring three knockdowns in the third round.
Currently a major force in ONE Championship, Carrillo holds the ONE Featherweight Muay Thai World Championship. His rise in the organization has been marked by high-stakes bouts, such as his April 2025 knockout of Sitthichai Sitsongpeenong, which earned him a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus. He has also demonstrated remarkable versatility, moving between weight classes and securing victories against top-tier opponents, including a unanimous decision win over Shadow Singha Mawynn in February 2026 for the interim ONE Featherweight Muay Thai World Championship.
