In short: Nuta Kotlyarenko arrived in New York with nothing, but transformed himself into Nudie Cohn, the tailor who bedazzled the stars. From Elvis Presley to Cher, his flamboyant, rhinestone-encrusted suits became the ultimate symbol of Hollywood glamour, proving that the American dream could be stitched together with enough grit and glitter.

Born in 1902 in Kyiv, Nuta Kotlyarenko fled the violence of pogroms in the Russian Empire as an 11-year-old. After arriving in New York in 1913, he worked as a shoeshine boy and a scrappy, 106-pound boxer before finding his true calling in fashion. His journey eventually led him to Hollywood, where he and his wife, Bobbie, began crafting custom Western wear in their garage. They used magazine photos of stars like Tom Mix as inspiration, turning the humble garage into the birthplace of the iconic Nudie suit.

The signature Nudie style was defined by extreme ostentation: heavy embroidery, gold and silver lamé, and thousands of rhinestones. His business strategy was as bold as his designs. He famously gave away a peach-colored suit to country star Porter Wagoner in 1962, betting that the performer would act as a walking billboard. The gamble paid off, and his shop, Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors, became a destination for legends including Hank Williams, Gram Parsons, and Elton John. His suits were more than clothing; they were canvases for cultural expression, featuring everything from musical notations to marijuana leaves.

Beyond fashion, Cohn was a master of self-promotion. He drove customized 'Nudie Mobiles'—Pontiac convertibles outfitted with pistol door handles and steer-horn hood ornaments—and even tipped with dollar bills bearing his own face. He wore mismatched boots as a deliberate reminder of his impoverished youth. When he passed away in 1984, he left behind a legacy that transcended mere tailoring. His granddaughter, Jamie Nudie, continues to manage the brand today, ensuring that the man who once watched American cowboys on a screen in Kyiv remains a permanent fixture of the Hollywood story.
