How an Atlanta rap collective built a cult following on punk rock aesthetics
In short: Founded in 2019 by Playboi Carti, the Atlanta-based record label Opium has cultivated a distinct identity. By blending dark rap sounds with the rebellious spirit of 1970s and 1980s punk, the label has moved beyond mainstream trap conventions to build a dedicated, cultlike audience around its roster of artists.
Opium, sometimes written as 00pium, operates as both a record label and a rap collective. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, the label currently manages five acts, including Playboi Carti, Ken Carson, Destroy Lonely, ASAP Nast, and the duo HXG. Its creative output is supported by a network of producers like F1lthy, Lil 88, and KP Beatz, who were instrumental in shaping the sound of Carti's second studio album, Whole Lotta Red. The label's aesthetic is deeply rooted in the local Atlanta rage rap scene, yet it draws significant stylistic inspiration from the punk rock era of the late twentieth century.
The label's commercial trajectory has seen steady growth through a series of studio albums and mixtapes. Ken Carson, who joined in 2019, saw his third studio album, A Great Chaos, reach the top twenty on the US Billboard 200 in 2023, eventually hitting the number one spot with his 2025 release, More Chaos. Similarly, Destroy Lonely achieved a career milestone in 2024 when his second studio album, Love Lasts Forever, topped the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. These releases are frequently accompanied by deluxe editions that expand the projects with additional tracks, a strategy that has helped solidify the label's presence in the industry.
Despite its success, the label has faced logistical hurdles. The Antagonist Tour, which was intended to feature the entire Opium roster alongside affiliate ApolloRed1, was initially scheduled for 2023 but was ultimately cancelled following a series of postponements. Nevertheless, the label's influence remains significant, with its artists consistently charting and maintaining a unique niche that separates them from traditional trap music. To date, the collective has released a total of nine studio albums and three mixtapes, demonstrating a prolific output that continues to resonate with its core fanbase.
