In short: Founded in 1957 by a father and son duo, O'Reilly Auto Parts evolved from a local Springfield operation into an international powerhouse. Today, the retailer manages over 6,400 locations across North America, proving that the right strategy for professional and DIY mechanics can scale across borders and decades.

The story of O'Reilly Auto Parts began with Charles F. O'Reilly, a veteran of the automotive supply industry who had spent decades working in Springfield, Missouri. In 1957, following a corporate reorganization at his previous employer, Link Motor Supply, Charles and his son, Charles H. (Chub) O'Reilly, launched their own venture. They opened their first store on December 2, 1957, with a modest team of 13 employees. By the end of their first full year, the company generated $700,000 in sales, a figure that doubled to $1.3 million by 1961 as they expanded their reach to serve independent jobbers.

Growth was fueled by a series of strategic acquisitions that transformed the company from a regional player into a national chain. The 1998 merger with Hi/LO Auto Supply pushed the firm into the top 10, while the 2001 purchase of Mid-State Automotive Distributors elevated them to the top five. The most significant expansion occurred in 2008 with the acquisition of CSK Auto, which added 1,273 stores and secured O'Reilly’s position as the third-largest auto parts chain in the United States. This aggressive expansion strategy continued into the 21st century, targeting specific regional chains across New England, Florida, and the Midwest.

In recent years, the company has looked beyond the United States to sustain its momentum. The 2019 acquisition of Mexico’s Mayasa Auto Parts marked its first international foray, eventually leading to a full rebranding of its Mexican operations to O'Reilly Autopartes by late 2023. Further expansion into Puerto Rico and Canada, through the acquisition of Groupe Del Vasto, has solidified its presence across the continent. Despite this massive scale, the company maintains its roots in Springfield, where it has been headquartered since 2010 in a facility built to accommodate the corporate growth resulting from its earlier acquisitions.
