In short: Known for its unusual shape and long-standing representation, Ohio's ninth congressional district offers a unique case study in American political geography. From its nickname as the Snake by the Lake to its recent status as a rare district that split its ticket in the 2024 presidential election, it remains a fascinating outlier.

Represented by Marcy Kaptur since 1983, the district has long been a focal point for discussions on political boundaries. Its previous configuration was famously dubbed the Snake by the Lake, a moniker earned by its elongated, narrow path stretching along the shoreline of Lake Erie from Toledo toward Cleveland. This design was so precarious that some observers noted the district was only connected by a single bridge and a state park, leading to arguments that it lacked true physical continuity during high water levels.

The district became a central figure in the 2018 legal battle against Ohio's congressional map, which alleged that the state's redistricting process constituted unconstitutional gerrymandering. Critics argued the district aggressively carved its way across the northern edge of the state, effectively fragmenting major urban centers like Toledo and Cleveland. However, the legal challenge stalled in 2019 when the Supreme Court declined to intervene, leaving the existing district boundaries intact.

Following the 2020 census, the district was redrawn to encompass a region in northwestern Ohio that borders Michigan, Indiana, and Ontario, Canada, across Lake Erie. It now includes the entirety of several counties, such as Defiance, Williams, Fulton, Lucas, Ottawa, Sandusky, and Erie, along with parts of Wood County. Despite these shifts, the district maintains a distinct political identity, notably emerging as one of only 13 districts nationwide that supported Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race while simultaneously returning a Democrat to the House of Representatives.
