How Ottawa’s football franchise rose from the ashes of two failed predecessors
In short: The Ottawa Redblacks are the third Canadian Football League team to represent the nation's capital. After the historic Rough Riders folded in 1996 and the short-lived Renegades ceased operations in 2006, the city endured years of stadium debates and legal hurdles before finally returning to the field in 2014.
The path to the Redblacks' 2014 debut was fraught with municipal controversy and infrastructure delays. Following the collapse of the Ottawa Renegades in 2006, the city faced a long period without professional football. When Jeff Hunt’s group was awarded a franchise in 2008, the project stalled due to structural issues at the aging Frank Clair Stadium. A complex redevelopment plan for Lansdowne Park, which included renovating the stadium into TD Place, faced intense public debate and multiple legal challenges before finally securing city council approval in 2012.
The team’s identity reflects a deep connection to Ottawa’s football heritage. Although owners initially sought to revive the beloved 'Rough Riders' name—a brand that spanned 120 years and nine Grey Cup titles—they ultimately chose 'Redblacks' to avoid trademark objections from the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Despite this new branding, the CFL officially recognizes the Redblacks as part of a single, continuous entity dating back to 1876, acknowledging the city's long history of football despite two distinct intervals of nonparticipation.
Success arrived quickly for the franchise. After a difficult inaugural season in 2014, the team surged to win the East Division title in 2015 and reached the Grey Cup. In 2016, the Redblacks defeated the Calgary Stampeders in overtime, securing the city's first Grey Cup championship in 40 years. This victory solidified the team's place in the community, supported by a unique culture that includes a lumberjack mascot named 'Big Joe' and a coed cheer and dance program that engages local youth through junior training initiatives.
