In short: Founded in 1876, the Ottawa Rough Riders were one of North America's oldest professional sports teams. Despite winning nine Grey Cup championships and defining an era of Canadian football, the franchise eventually collapsed under mismanagement, leaving behind a complex legacy of trademark disputes and a confusingly similar rival team.

The Ottawa Rough Riders began as the Ottawa Football Club in September 1876. Over their long history, the team underwent several identity shifts, including a period as the Ottawa Senators from 1925 to 1930. The name 'Rough Riders' was adopted in 1898, likely inspired by Theodore Roosevelt's regiment during the Spanish-American War, though later lore linked it to Ottawa's logging heritage. This dual identity created decades of confusion with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, a separate team whose name had entirely different origins.

The team reached its peak in the 1960s and 1970s, winning five Grey Cups during those two decades. Their success was built on legendary figures like coach Frank Clair and players such as Russ Jackson and Tony Gabriel. However, the 1980s and 1990s brought a steady decline marked by poor ownership and financial instability. In 1991, the team was sold for a single dollar to Bernard and Lonie Glieberman. By 1996, after years of mismanagement and failed attempts to relocate the franchise to the United States, the Rough Riders ceased operations.

The legacy of the Rough Riders remains a point of contention in the Canadian Football League. When a new Ottawa franchise, the Redblacks, launched in 2014, they were blocked from using the 'Rough Riders' name due to trademark enforcement by the Saskatchewan team. Despite this, the CFL now officially recognizes the Rough Riders, the short-lived Ottawa Renegades, and the Redblacks as a single entity for record-keeping purposes, tracing their collective history back to the original 1876 club.
