A supernatural Western that struggled to find its footing at the box office
In short: Released in 2010, Jonah Hex attempted to blend the gritty Western genre with supernatural elements. Despite a high-profile cast including Josh Brolin and Megan Fox, the film faced a difficult production and ultimately failed to find an audience, grossing only $11 million against a $47 million budget.
The production of Jonah Hex was marked by significant creative shifts and a frantic filming schedule. While the screenplay by Neveldine/Taylor originally combined Western tropes with occult themes, the directorial team changed multiple times; Jimmy Hayward eventually took the helm after the original writers stepped down due to creative differences. Lead actor Josh Brolin later described the experience as hectic, noting that the production required reshooting 66 pages of material in just 12 days. Brolin also attributed the film's ultimate failure to studio interference during the post-production phase.
The narrative follows a disfigured Confederate soldier and bounty hunter, played by Brolin, who gains the ability to communicate with the dead after being healed by the Crow people. The plot involves a vengeful antagonist, Quentin Turnbull (John Malkovich), who seeks to use an experimental weapon invented by Eli Whitney to attack the United States. This high-concept premise led some critics to describe the film as a 'graphic anthology of strange occult ideas' rather than a traditional Western.
Despite the talent involved—including Michael Fassbender and Will Arnett—the film was a commercial disappointment. It opened at number seven in the United States, earning roughly $5.3 million during its debut weekend. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a low approval rating of 11% based on 152 reviews, with critics noting that the film felt unfocused and appeared as though it were assembled under a tight deadline.
