The deceptive simplicity of a single night's patrol
In short: When two police officers chose to ignore a suspicious figure fleeing into a swamp, they didn't just avoid paperwork. They inadvertently set the stage for a web of corruption, framed investigations, and a hidden truth that even the official arrest couldn't uncover.
Directed by Ratheena PT, the 2025 Malayalam-language crime thriller Paathirathri follows officers Jancy Kurian and Hareesh. The narrative tension begins during a routine night patrol when the duo witnesses a man fleeing into a swamp. Fearing bureaucratic backlash, Hareesh convinces Jancy to abandon the pursuit and report nothing. This decision haunts them as they are later diverted to investigate a suicide in Manthara, only to find the swamp area has been suspiciously covered with sand.
The film's plot thickens as the missing person's report for journalist Ansar leads to the discovery of his body in a pit. The officers find themselves targeted by DySP Suresh, a cunning officer known for framing the innocent. Suresh exploits Jancy’s personal vulnerabilities—including her strained marriage to her husband, Felix—to weave a narrative that leads to the duo's suspension. While Hareesh uncovers evidence of Suresh's past custodial brutality and his use of officers Binoy and Bijoy to harm Ansar, the investigation remains fraught with complexity.
The resolution presents a profound moral dilemma. While the evidence eventually leads to Suresh's arrest after his daughter, Anjali, confesses to the Superintendent of Police, the true killer remains unpunished. Jancy discovers that Ansar's wife, Yasmin, had drowned him in a fit of rage after discovering his infidelity. In the end, Jancy decides to hide this proof, letting the formal charges against Suresh remain, and asks for a relocation to begin again.
Critics offered a divided reception. While some praised the exploration of power dynamics and character-driven drama, others, such as Gopika Is of The Times of India, felt the film lacked conviction. Ratings ranged from 2/5 by Anandu Suresh and Vignesh Madhu to 3.5/5 by Gayathri Krishna.
