The 2003 thriller that inspired a new generation of police officers
In short: Before it was a commercial success, Kaakha Kaakha was a risky gamble. Directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, this Tamil-language action thriller explores the ruthless world of encounter killings, sparking a debate about vigilantism that continues to resonate with both filmmakers and law enforcement today.
Released on 1 August 2003, Kaakha Kaakha (meaning 'Protect, protect') served as a career breakthrough for director Gautham Vasudev Menon and actor Suriya. The film follows Anbuselvan, an honest but stern assistant commissioner of the Chennai City Police Crime Branch, and his special unit. Their approach to organized crime is characterized by a ruthless tactic: routine encounter killings. This narrative choice has faced scrutiny, with critics like Kirubhakar Purushothaman questioning the romanticization of vigilante justice in Tamil cinema.
The production was famously difficult. Many producers initially refused to finance the project due to Menon's budget requirements, until producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu stepped in. To ensure authenticity, Suriya underwent commando training and consulted with real officers, including Vijayakumar and Shailendra Babu, regarding their encounter experiences. Even the sets were meticulously managed; an outhouse set built on 24 feet of water in Sri Lanka required daily watering of its green-grass roof to prevent it from drying up.
The film's impact extends beyond the screen. While some argue that such films normalize police brutality, Menon has noted that many officers claim his work inspired them to join the force. In 2024, Suriya recalled a District Magistrate in Varanasi who was inspired to become an IPS officer after watching the film. Despite the intense themes, the movie was a massive success, running for over 100 days in theaters and winning multiple awards, including four Filmfare Awards South.
