In short: In 2011, authorities opened subterranean vaults beneath the Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, revealing a staggering hoard of gold, diamonds, and ancient artifacts. This collection, accumulated over thousands of years by various dynasties, is considered the largest cache of precious items in recorded history, with estimates valuing it at 22 billion dollars.

The Padmanabhaswamy Temple, dedicated to the deity Vishnu, has served as a repository for wealth for millennia. Donations from dynasties including the Cheras, Pandyas, and the Travancore royal family have filled its vaults, which are designated A through H. While vaults C, D, E, and F are accessed regularly for ceremonial use, other chambers remain shrouded in mystery. Vault B, for instance, has not been opened since at least the 1880s, and attempts to enter it in 2011 and 2014 were halted due to legal injunctions and concerns over religious sentiments.

The scale of the discovery is immense. Vault A alone contained over 102,000 groups of objects, including a solid gold idol of Mahavishnu standing four feet tall, studded with diamonds. Other finds include an 800-kilogram hoard of medieval gold coins, thousands of pure-gold chains, and Napoleonic-era currency. These items represent a cross-section of history, reflecting trade networks that spanned from the Sumerian period to the Roman Empire. Archaeologists note that the temple's status as a 'Golden Temple' was already established in Tamil Sangam literature between 500 BC and 300 AD.

The management of this wealth has been a subject of intense legal scrutiny. In 2020, the Supreme Court of India granted the Travancore Royal Family the right to manage the temple's financial affairs, overriding previous high court rulings. Beyond the physical gold, the temple houses over 3,000 bundles of archaic palm-leaf records, known as Cadjan leaves, which document these donations over the centuries. Most of these records remain unstudied, promising further insight into the origins of this extraordinary accumulation of wealth that has survived through centuries of regional political upheaval and shifting dynastic power.
