From Pennsylvania cover bands to Grammy wins and Hall of Fame inductions
In short: He is the only constant member of the multi-platinum band Train, but Pat Monahan’s journey spans much more than pop hits. From winning big on game shows to performing the national anthem at major sporting finals, his career is a tapestry of unexpected roles.
Born in 1969 in Erie, Pennsylvania, Pat Monahan’s musical roots began in the late 1980s with the cover band Rogues Gallery. After moving to California in 1993, he helped form Train, a group that would eventually achieve massive global success. One of his most profound achievements came in 2002, when he earned two Grammy Awards, including one for the hit "Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)". That specific song was deeply personal, written as a tribute to his mother following her death from cancer.
Monahan’s versatility extends far beyond the recording studio. He has navigated the worlds of television and film, appearing in episodes of CSI: NY and Hawaii Five-0, and even starring in the Hallmark film Christmas In Tahoe, which he also executive produced. His vocal talents have reached even younger audiences as the voice of Driver Dan in the children's series Driver Dan's Story Train. He has also demonstrated a knack for high-stakes competition, winning $125,000 on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire in 2001 to benefit Camp Ronald McDonald.
Beyond his work with Train, Monahan has established himself as a collaborator and presenter. He has performed with legendary acts like the Hollies, INXS, and even inducted the band Journey into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. Whether he is singing the US national anthem at the NBA Finals or interviewing industry figures on his podcast, Patcast, Monahan remains a fixture in the American musical landscape.
