How a pandemic-era concert series rewrote the global box office record books
In short: When the pandemic cancelled the Map of the Soul Tour, BTS pivoted to a hybrid model of stadium shows and digital streams. The result was not just a survival tactic, but a financial phenomenon that shattered long-standing industry records for non-English-language acts.
The 'Permission to Dance on Stage' series, spanning from October 2021 in Seoul to April 2022 in Las Vegas, functioned as a massive experiment in hybrid engagement. Faced with varying global restrictions, the group utilized both in-person stadium performances and massive pay-per-view streams. In Seoul, while the Olympic Stadium holds 80,000, the October 2024 show was strictly a streaming event. By March 2022, the group returned to the same venue with a limited in-person audience of 15,000 per day, marking the largest music gathering permitted by the South Korean government under Covid-19 protocols at that time.
The financial impact was unprecedented. At SoFi Stadium, the Los Angeles dates earned $33.3 million across 214,000 tickets, representing the most profitable series of concerts at one location since Roger Waters played Buenos Aires in 2012. Crucially, BTS became the first non-English-language act to surpass both the $20 million and $30 million thresholds in a single engagement, breaking a record previously held by Mexican singer Luis Miguel, who earned $19.3 million in 2006.
The Las Vegas leg at Allegiant Stadium further pushed boundaries, earning $35.9 million and setting the all-time box office record for both the city and the state of Nevada. This expansion included an 'urban concert playpark' across MGM Resorts properties, featuring everything from water shows at the Fountains of Bellagio to themed hotel rooms. Despite physical challenges, such as member V performing seated due to a calf injury and member Jin participating with minimal choreography following finger surgery, the series reached an estimated 4 million attendees globally.
