In short: Before Perth Glory became a staple of Australian football, it was part of a doomed dream to create a sporting empire in the East. A financial disaster in Singapore eventually forced a pivot that helped re-establish soccer in a state dominated by Australian Rules Football.

Perth's journey into national club soccer was marked by early logistical and financial hurdles. While Western Australia showed interest in joining the National Soccer League (NSL) as early as 1977, the league remained reluctant to include a team from the west for nearly two decades. The Perth Kangaroos IFC was established in 1994 by a collective of entrepreneurs headed by Joe Claudio. This new entity attempted to compete in the 1994 Singapore Premier League with visions of establishing an 'Asia-Pacific Super League.' However, the experiment was a financial disaster; despite finishing the season undefeated and winning the title, dwindling resources forced the club to fold.

The vacuum left by the Kangaroos led to the 1995 launch of Perth Glory FC. Licensed into the 1996–97 NSL season, the club faced the daunting task of making soccer mainstream in a region where the AFL holds media dominance. Under coach Gary Marocchi, the team adopted a bold, attacking style that quickly built a following. The club's success was cemented during the era of Bernd Stange and Mich d'Avray, who guided the side to three league Premierships and two Championships between 1996 and 2003.

One of the most significant milestones occurred in the 1999–2000 season. A dedicated stadium for Glory was declared by Western Australian authorities following a major semifinal at Subiaco Oval, which drew 42,764 spectators—a then-Australian record for club soccer. This momentum eventually culminated in the 2003 Grand Final, where Mich d'Avray’s tactical shift to a 4–4–2 formation secured the first NSL Championship for the club, ending years of near-misses and heartbreak.
