In short: Petals of Reincarnation imagines a world where artifacts grant ordinary people the talents of history's greatest figures. Protagonist Touya Senji joins the Forest of the Greats to combat the Sinners, an organization reviving infamous historical villains. It is a high-stakes struggle over identity, morality, and the weight of legacy.

Created by Mikihisa Konishi, Petals of Reincarnation began its serialization in May 2014 within the pages of Monthly Comic Blade. Following the magazine's final issue in July 2014, the series transitioned to the Comic Blade website in September of that same year. The narrative centers on Touya Senji, a high school student struggling with an inferiority complex. His life changes when he discovers an artifact that allows him to inherit the unique talents of historical figures, leading him to join the Forest of the Greats.

The Forest of the Greats is a group dedicated to world peace, led by the composed and rational John V. Neumann. The organization includes a diverse array of members who embody the talents of legendary individuals, such as the swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, the nurse F. Nightingale, and the strategist Jubei Mitsuyoshi Yagyu. These characters must navigate the moral complexities of their borrowed identities while facing the Sinners, who weaponize the legacies of history's most infamous figures for their own ends.

The series delves into the tension between embracing a past life and forging a new, independent future. Characters like the immortal combatant and the cat-like E. Schrödinger bring unique dynamics to the battlefield, often blending historical archetypes with supernatural abilities. The story’s exploration of these themes was further expanded through an anime television adaptation produced by Benten Film, which aired from April to June 2026. Through its blend of action and philosophical inquiry, the manga examines what it truly means to possess greatness and the cost of wielding such power.
