How to survive a reincarnation into a doomed villainess role
In short: When 17-year-old otaku Catarina Claes regains her memories after a bump to the head, she realizes she is trapped in a dangerous game. In every possible route of the otome game Fortune Lover, her character is destined for exile or death. Now, she must use her meta-knowledge to survive.
Starting in July 2014, this series appeared on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website, featuring illustrations by Nami Hidaka and writing by Satoru Yamaguchi. The plot centres on Catarina Claes, who realises she has been reincarnated within the otome game Fortune Lover. In the original game, Catarina is the antagonist, and regardless of the player's chosen route, her fate is grim: she is destined to be either killed or exiled. The story began on the user-generated platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō. It was eventually picked up by Ichijinsha for publication.
To avoid these 'destruction flags,' Catarina attempts to alter key game scenes using her extensive knowledge of the game's mechanics. While her earth magic is described as weak, she possesses excellent charisma. Her efforts to change her fate lead to unexpected consequences, such as causing various characters to fall in love with her—a development that the dense Catarina fails to recognize.
The narrative features a complex web of characters, including Prince Geordo Stuart, her fiancé who in the original game would have either exiled or killed her, and her adoptive brother Keith, an earth magic prodigy. The series has expanded significantly since its online debut, with the first light novel published by Ichijinsha in August 2015. As of August 2026, sixteen volumes of the light novel have been released, alongside a manga adaptation and an anime series produced by Silver Link. The franchise includes a spin-off manga and an anime film released in late 2023. Additionally, the English-speaking audience can access the series through J-Novel Club and Seven Seas Entertainment.
