From assistant to armored hero: the evolution of Pepper Potts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
In short: Pepper Potts began as a grounded personal assistant to Tony Stark, but her role expanded through corporate leadership and eventually into combat as the armored hero Rescue. Across seven films, her journey reflects a complex evolution from a supportive partner to a central figure in the fight against global threats.
First appearing in the 1963 comic Tales of Suspense #45, Pepper Potts was initially modeled after the character Schultzy from The Bob Cummings Show. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, portrayed by Gwyneth Paltrow, the character was reimagined as a smart, level-headed professional. Throughout the film series, her relationship with Tony Stark serves as a narrative anchor, evolving from a professional dynamic in 2008's Iron Man to a marriage that produces their daughter, Morgan.
Potts' professional trajectory is marked by her promotion to CEO of Stark Industries, a role she assumes as Stark shifts his focus toward his responsibilities as Iron Man. Her character arc frequently challenges traditional tropes; in Iron Man 3, for instance, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige noted that the film plays with the 'damsel in distress' archetype, questioning whether Potts is a victim or a savior. This culminates in her survival of the Extremis serum experiments and her eventual participation in the final battle against Thanos' army in 2023.
The character's reception has been varied among critics. While some praised the writing and Paltrow's performance for bringing a grounded presence to the films, others were more critical of the 'girl Friday' role. Beyond the live-action films, alternate versions of Potts have appeared in the animated series What If...?, voiced by Beth Hoyt, showing her capacity for action and investigative work in different timelines. Following Stark's death, Potts continues his legacy through philanthropy, focusing on supporting those displaced by the Blip.
